VICE Recommends "Too Prickly" for Bandcamp Friday

VICE includes Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World in its October Bandcamp Friday recommendations.

Friday, October 2, 2020, marked another Bandcamp Friday, on which the music site committed to waiving its revenue share to give 100% of the sales profit to artists. As the First Friday tradition has grown, ‘wrap up’ lists of recommended artists to support have become more popular. VICE’s NOISEY music site included Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World in its article TGIBF—Thank God It's Bandcamp Friday! Here's What to Buy.

Of the album, writer Josh Terry wrote:

I laughed when I first heard about Wife Patrol because it's an actually funny name for a band. I also laughed when I heard their debut LP Too Prickly For This World because this Indianapolis trio makes rock 'n' roll that's so refreshing you almost have to giggle. Throughout, the band gleefully barnstorms through their punk and classic rock influences. Where the opening "Why Do I Keep Doing This to Myself" sounds like Black Sabbath or Thin Lizzy, the song unfolds into pristine jangle pop. Elsewhere soaring guitar theatrics anchor tracks like "Cactus Girl," which features lines like "I'm sick of hearing about your mother's tattoos."

Wife Patrol in AFROPUNK's 6 New Releases You Need to Hear

See Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World featured in AFROPUNK’s “Bandcamp Friday: 6 New Releases You Need to Hear”.

Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World was released on Friday, September 4, 2020, a designated Bandcamp Day - which is when the online music site agreed to waive its revenue share on all artists’ sales for the day. Music blog and brand AFROPUNK included the debut album in its wrap-up list Bandcamp Friday: 6 New Releases You Need to Hear.

AFROPUNK’s Nathan Leigh writes:

In the space of a single song, the Indianapolis trio jump from metal riffage to joyfully catchy pub rock without losing an ounce of power or effervescence. Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World is overflowing with indelible hooks and defiant verses. Highlights like “Girl Cactus” and “Valentine Citrus” are determined to stick in your head for days.

Overblown Reviews "Too Prickly For This World"

Read Overblown’s review of Wife Patrol’s Too Prickly For This World.

UK music blog Overblown published a song by song review of Wife Patrol’s debut album Too Prickly For This World on release day, September 4, 2020. Written by Emma Laurent, the review gave the album a score of 87% or 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Laurent writes:

Wife Patrol delivers what other bands fail to when experimenting with structure. Wife Patrol finds a way to create a flawless Rocky Horror, instead of Dr Frankenstein’s jarring monster carelessly stitched together. The direction of each song is always interesting. The structure changes within songs always feel earned and are never disruptive. I’m in awe that even the songs I personally found unfavourable, the skill and theory behind each musical choice is literally noteworthy. While this album is bound to be a top album within the scene, there are moments where Wife Patrol’s technical abilities create a muted sound where I wish the band would have just let itself run wild. In future albums, I look forward to Wife Patrol’s undeniable skills unleashing themselves to create a truly unfiltered masterpiece.
